Chefs recommend these four chains for flavorful white pizza without tomato sauce.

There are so many types of pizza, and you really can’t go wrong with any of them, but white pizza stands out. It skips the tomato sauce, putting more attention on the crust, cheese, and other ingredients. So what makes a good white pizza? “I’m looking for a good balance of creamy cheese, garlic, herbs, and a crisp, flavorful crust,” says Dennis Littley, Chef and Culinary Expert at Ask Chef Dennis. “Since there’s no tomato sauce to hide behind, the quality of the crust and cheese really matters.”  When it comes to finding the best white pizza at pizza chains, Chef Dennis says these four stand out.

Uno Pizzeria & Grill – Wild Mushroom Thin Crust Pizza

Uno Pizzeria & Grill is especially well known for its deep-dish approach, so its white pizza offers a different way to enjoy the chain’s signature crust. It’s a fitting choice for diners who prefer a richer, more substantial style of pizza. “Uno is a great choice when you’re looking for a white pizza with plenty of flavor without a traditional tomato sauce,” says Chef Dennis. “Their Wild Mushroom Thin Crust Pizza combines white cheddar, Parmesan, and mozzarella with garlic and mushrooms for a savory, cheese-forward pie.”

Mellow Mushroom – Great White

Mellow Mushroom has built a following around its distinctive pizzas and eclectic menu. The Great White stands out as one of its signature specialty pies, offering an alternative to the chain’s tomato-sauce-based options. “The Great White is one of my favorite choices for anyone who loves a creamy, cheese-loaded pizza,” Chef Dennis shares. “It combines ricotta, mozzarella, feta, and provolone with onions and chicken, all on Mellow Mushroom’s signature crust. A lot going on, but the flavors work beautifully together.”

Jules Thin Crust – Mario’s Pie

For those who prefer a thinner base, Jules Thin Crust takes a different approach from the deep-dish and thicker-crust options found at some other chains. Mario’s Pie gives diners a cheese-focused option that highlights the restaurant’s thin-crust style. According to Chef Dennis, “Jules Thin Crust Pizza is a great place to look when you want a white pizza with a crisp, thin crust.” He explains, “Mario’s Pie combines ricotta, mozzarella, and other savory toppings for a creamy, cheesy bite without feeling too heavy. I really like the contrast between the rich cheeses and that thin, crispy crust. It’s a great example of why a good white pizza doesn’t need tomato sauce to be full of flavor.”

California Pizza Kitchen – Five Cheese Pizza

You don’t have to visit a California Pizza Kitchen restaurant to enjoy one of its pizzas. The brand also offers a selection of frozen pizzas in grocery store freezer aisles, including a cheese-forward option that’s worth considering when you’re craving white pizza at home. While CPK doesn’t offer a classic white pizza, some locations may allow you to order a pizza without the sauce. “California Pizza Kitchen is known for putting its own spin on traditional pizza, and its cheese-forward options are worth considering when you want a white-style pie,” says Chef Dennis. “The combination of multiple cheeses gives the pizza plenty of flavor and richness while still letting the crust shine.”
