ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – A longtime restaurant burned early Tuesday morning in the Southeast Alaska town of Wrangell, according to authorities.

The Marine Bar that sits along the town’s harbor on Shakes Street caught fire around 3 a.m. Tuesday, according to longtime Wrangell resident Susan Stevens, who lives next door to the bar and restaurant.

The City and Borough of Wrangell posted on its Facebook page that the street was closed as fire crews worked to douse the fire.

There is no word on the cause of the fire, the city says.

Stevens said that the eatery has been a staple of Wrangell since it opened in the 1950s. While it has changed ownership several times over the decades, the restaurant has been a place for fishermen and residents to come together, she said.

“The place has been really popular,” she said. “There is only a few places to eat here.”

Stevens lives next door to the restaurant and said she felt compelled to leave her home, which sits next to a propane tank and the burning bar.

“The fire was in the back of the building, kind of where the propane tank is, and I knew that they had three or four propane tanks in the Marine Bar,” she said.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details are known.
