New restaurant brings Greek barbecue to North San Antonio

A new Greek restaurant is bringing Mediterranean classics and Greek barbecue to North San Antonio.

Two Greeks Grill opened last week, offering Greek-style barbecue on platters, gyros and sandwiches, alongside Greek dips, desserts and wine and beer. 

“Its not like your mom-and-pop, grandma’s cooking,” said Jerry Kouroumousis, who co-founded the restaurant with his uncle Nick Zaimis.

The new restaurant, located at 1903 N. Loop 1604 East, fills a gap in the local Mediterranean food scene following two recent closures. It comes about a month after the owners of longtime Greek and Middle Eastern food hub Zorba’s Greek Mediterranean Cuisine announced they flipped the sign for the last time, and a few months after Grandma’s Greek Taste shuttered amid defaulted rent payments.

All dishes at Two Greeks are made in-house starting at 7 a.m. daily, Kouroumousis said. He said the restaurant specializes in the meats it prepares.

The menu offers Greek mainstays including gyros, souvlaki, spanakopita (spinach pie), tiropita (cheese pie) and feta wrapped in phyllo dough and drizzled with honey. It also features less common options, such as exohiko on the spit – a pork belly roll filled with cheese and peppers – and seasoned beef patties called bifteki.

Up to 10 people can share a mixed grill served with fries, pita and tzatziki. Diners can also choose from an assortment of dips: melitzanosalata (roasted eggplant), skordalia (garlic and potato purée), tzatziki and tirokafteri (spicy whipped feta).

On the dessert menu, phyllo dough reigns supreme, with options such as baklava, orange phyllo cake and phyllo-wrapped custard. The drink offerings include Greek beers and wines.

The restaurant is designed to look like a Greek coastal town with stone details and a balcony jutting from the wall above the open kitchen. A construction crew spent months gutting and remodeling the space that formerly housed Mongolian barbecue chain Genghis Grill. 

Kouroumousis said he and his team are glad to finally open the restaurant, which was originally slated for an April opening, 

“We’re bringing Greece to San Antonio” Kouroumousis said in a video on Facebook.

Two Greeks Grill opens at 11 a.m. daily. It closes at 8 p.m. on Sundays, 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
