One of the first Mexican restaurants on Cape Cod is shutting down after more than four decades.
Sam Diego’s in Hyannis will permanently close on Nov. 15 “after 44 incredible years of serving our community,” the restaurant announced on its website and on social media Thursday.
The announcement comes after Sam Diego’s went on the market in January 2025 for an undisclosed price, the Cape Cod Times reported. Since no one has purchased the restaurant, its owners have decided to close it for good.
“Over the past two years, we actively marketed the business for sale in hopes of passing the torch to new ownership. Unfortunately, this did not materialize, and the time has come for us to take this next step,” Sam Diego’s said.
“We are filled with immense gratitude for the decades of support from our amazing community. We also want to deeply thank our dedicated, loyal staff, whose hard work and passion made Sam Diego’s what it is today,” the restaurant continued. “Thank you for being part of our Samily and for 44 years of unforgettable memories.”
Clarke Buchanan opened Sam Diego’s in 1982, the Cape Cod Times reported. Located at 950 Iyannough Road, the Mexican eatery has been a go-to stop for those visiting Hyannis. The restaurant has catered to large parties and families with its colorful space, outdoor tables and Mexican fare.
The Cape Cod Times reported that the restaurant’s artwork will be auctioned off starting in late October. Auction details will be publicized via a QR code at Sam Diego’s and on its social media, according to the outlet.
In the meantime, patrons are invited to visit Sam Diego’s for one last meal.
“We would love to see you before we say goodbye,” the restaurant said. “Please come in to: Redeem your outstanding gift certificates, Enjoy your favorite meal and Raise one last margarita with us.”
