Hashi Market, a Japanese grocery chain described as part supermarket and part department store, will open its first West Coast location on Friday, Oct. 9, in Cupertino.

Besides a ribbon-cutting, the 10 a.m. grand opening will include a tuna-cutting demonstration and tasting, vendor demos, prizes and opening-weekend deals.

The site is a former Sprouts market in the Crossroads Center at Stevens Creek Boulevard and South De Anza Boulevard.

The New York-based Hashi stores feature a sushi counter, matcha drinks and snacks, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. The stores also offer skincare products and kitchen appliances as part of its “mini department store” concept.

Because of its diversity, the Bay Area — and Cupertino in particular — was a natural pick for a major expansion effort, Operations Director Justin Li of Hashi Market said.

“Customers here are knowledgeable, curious and increasingly interested in high-quality products with a clear sense of origin. That aligns closely with what we want Hashi Market to represent,” he told the Bay Area Newspaper Group. “Our seafood is sourced directly from Japan, and our beef comes directly from Hokkaido, allowing us to bring the quality and authenticity of Japanese food closer to our customers.”

The chain currently has six stores in New York City, and is exploring options at other Bay Area market sites in Milpitas, San Mateo and Union City, as well as in Colorado and Massachusetts.

About 10 new stores are expected to open between now and mid-2027.
