One of Houston’s longer-lived restaurant suppliers has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Chef Mart Restaurant Supply filed its petition Sunday. According to court documents, the company at 8677 Southwest Freeway is roughly $437,000 in the hole.
Palestinian native Mohyadein “Dean” Salaymeh founded Chef Mart in 1992. Salaymeh wrote on LinkedIn that he founded the company after discovering a demand for high-end restaurant supplies.
Chef Mart sells all sorts of appliances and equipment for hospitality operators, including stoves, fryers, fridges and simple kitchenware. The company also does installations and counts a few notable customers, including Chuckwagon BBQ & Burgers in Katy and the Old Hickory Inn Barbecue chain.
Court documents show Chef Mart has around $1.19 million in assets against $1.63 million in liabilities. In the petition form, the company signaled that after administrative costs, there would be no funds to distribute to unsecured creditors.
The court documents also indicate some legal liabilities, including pending lawsuits and judgements against Chef Mart. One of them involved Global Resources LLC, which was awarded $26,502.81 in arbitration, plus attorney fees and court costs.
By all accounts, Chef Mart appears to still be operating. The website is up and its last social media post was published Thursday. But in court documents, the company reported no gross business revenue for 2024, ’25 and ’26. Chef Mart has yet to respond to Chron’s request for comment.
Chef Mart is scheduled to hold a status conference with the presiding judge in the case on Nov. 17.
