Less than 18 months since opening the doors in the Proctor District, Fondi Pizzeria will close after service on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Owner Chris Olsen confirmed the news in an email Monday afternoon, not long after sharing a post on the restaurant’s Facebook and Instagram pages. The Gig Harbor location, which reopened under local ownership in late 2019, will continue and will honor all gift cards and loyalty points.

In a message posted on Fondi’s website, Olsen thanked the Proctor community for the warm welcome but pointed to costs and processes as contributing to the decision.

“Unfortunately, the fresh, made-from-scratch ingredients that go into all of our products are both expensive and labor-intensive, and we have not been able to achieve the financial profitability necessary to continue operating the Proctor location,” the message reads.

The Gig Harbor location is “thriving,” it continues, and there “you’ll find all of your favorite menu items, plus even more, along with ample free parking and a beautiful covered outdoor patio.”

In a phone call Tuesday afternoon, Olsen added that rent, which he said likely fell on the higher end of the market, also played a role in the decision.

Fondi Pizzeria replaced the relatively short-lived Millville and The Blind Pig — also an extension of a Gig Harbor business, Millville Pizza Co. — in April 2025 at 2515-2517 N. Proctor St. The Millville project updated the 2,600-square-foot space long home to Europa Bistro, installing a wall between the dining room and the vintage wooden bar to create a separate cocktail lounge. It felt like the kind of place Proctor and Tacoma needed, but it nonetheless sputtered to a halt after less than three years.

When Fondi swooped in, Olsen had the wall torn down, returning it to one big open room with more of an open kitchen. Like the Gig Harbor location, guests ordered and paid upfront at a counter, and staff delivered food and drink to your table. That model seemed to irk some customers, with several online reviews mentioning it lended a “cafeteria-style” vibe. While many seemed to appreciate the 12-inch, Neapolitan-style pies — baked in a gas-powered brick oven as opposed to the wood-fired in Gig Harbor — others felt they were inconsistent. The restaurant delivered through DoorDash, but in its defense, its type of quick-cook pie is not well-suited to such a journey. Hours also differed from the reliability of the older sibling, which has the perk of being in a shopping center with day-to-night appeal, while locals wondered if Tacoma needed another pizza-focused spot.

The Proctor restaurant also offered lunch deals like a personal 10-inch pie for $13 and half-off bottles of wine every Wednesday. Salads with house dressings were always available in small, medium and large sizes, and no listed pizza was more than $23.

Olsen said they will miss the opportunity to support local schools and their regulars.

The shutter leaves two prominent restaurant spaces vacant in the Proctor District, as Knapp’s closed last spring.
