A number of new eateries open across the Sacramento region in September. But with those came the departures of some long-standing family-owned restaurants.

Here’s what opened and closed in the Sacramento area in September.

Which businesses opened in September?Angry Chickz

The popular Nashville hot chicken restaurant opened its North Natomas location at 4740 Natomas Blvd. The restaurant held its grand opening Sept. 25, according to its social media page.

Serving fried chicken and a variety of savory sides, Angry Chickz is famous for its spiciness scale. The restaurant seasons its chicken from a mild to “no heat” option to higher levels of spiciness ranging from “hot,” “x-hot,” and “angry.”

Good Things Paperie

Looking for cute stationery supplies? Well, Good Things Paperie, a new paper goods store, has you covered. The store opened in Arden Fair Mall in early September.

The store’s inventory is filled with more than 100 stationery brands and paper products, according to Arden Fair. Good Things Paperie is located on the mall’s first floor.

Rare Earth Coffee

A coffee shop that specializes in air-roasting its beans opened in Rancho Cordova. Rare Earth Coffee, founded in the Central Valley, serves a wide assortment of drinks. The shop and drive-thru are located at 2348 Sunrise Blvd.

Arden Arcade welcomed an after-school math tutoring center in September. Mathnasium opened at 2569 Fair Oaks Blvd. in Loehmann’s Plaza Shopping Center. Tutoring services are offered for K-12 students. Each session is individualized to a student’s needs.

Akame Sushi

The all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant, Akame Sushi, opened in Rancho Cordova. Located at 12251 Folsom Blvd., Akame Sushi serves sushi, sushi tacos, and nigiri.

The restaurant officially opened Sept. 16, according to its social media.

The Asian supermarket chain, SF Supermarket, opened in south Sacramento on Sept. 18. The grocery store sells items from various Asian countries, including Japan, Vietnam, China and the Philippines. This SF Supermarket is on 7960 Gerber Road.

Kaway Cafe

Downtown Sacramento has a new cafe serving Filipino treats and sweet beverages. Kaway Cafe, 726 Merchant St., officially opened Sept. 22.

Some of Kaway Cafe’s drinks include specialty matcha, hojicha, ube latte and a buko pandan latte.

What closed in September?36 Handles Public House

An El Dorado Hills pub closed in late September after operating for more than a decade.

36 Handles Public House on 1010 White Rock Road permanently closed Sept. 26. The restaurant wrote on social media that the decision to close was “difficult” and even though they “tried everything (they) could to keep going…(they) were unable to make it work.”

Azul Mexican Food & Tequila Bar

The Mexican restaurant in the Lavender Heights district closed Sept. 26.

Owners Carlos and Jose Ulloa said the closure was due to a decline in business over the years and increasing cost of food supplies. Azul served Sacramento for 19 years.

Azayaka Japanese Fusion Roseville

After nearly two years in Roseville, the Sacramento sushi restaurant close up shop.

Azayaka Japanese Fusion at 6726 Stanford Ranch Road shut on Sept. 25, according to its website. Owner Hiro Ip said the restaurant closed as a result of a “strategic business decision.” He said he will now focus on the main location in Sacramento.

Six Starbucks closed in the Sacramento area in part of a mass closure nationwide of the famous coffee chain.

Starbucks shut 250 locations beginning Sept. 26. The company said the stores it closed were underperforming or did not “deliver the experience we want for customers and partners.”

Crumbl Cookie

A gourmet cookie shop in a large Sacramento-area shopping center alsoclosed.

Crumbl Cookie is now gone from the Delta Shores mall in south Sacramento, according to its Yelp page. The store first opened in 2021 and was among the 10 Crumbl Cookie stores in the Sacramento area.

Island Tacos

Having spent more than 20 years in East Sacramento, a mom-and-pop taco stand is now gone.

Family-run Island Tacos on 5088 Folsom Blvd. sold inexpensive Mexican fare, such as $2.25 tacos. It ceased operations Sept. 30.
