Many were upset when Bayside Lounge, the Vancouver bar that has been in operation since 1979, announced that it would be closing its doors by the end of the month.

“To our regulars, neighbours, visitors, DJs and every team member who has been part of Bayside over the years — thank you. You’ve made this much more than a lounge. You’ve made it a place for friendships, celebrations, and memories that will stay with us,” wrote Bayside on its Instagram.

Following the news of the closure, many began to blame the sushi restaurant next door, Lucky Sushi Co., for outbidding Bayside Lounge on rent and adding that the restaurant planned to expand into the space.

“This is DEVASTATING!!! No no no no no. Just no! How dare a restaurant bid against this iconic place? This gem in the neighbourhood for almost 50 years! Disappointing and shameful @luckysushi.co. And don’t think for ONE SECOND cuz you’re getting tagged we’re going to try it at least once. Not going to happen 🙅‍♀️❌🚫💯,” wrote one user on Dished Vancouver’s Instagram post sharing the news of the closure.

This comment was similar to many others on both the Dished Vancouver post and Bayside Lounge’s closure announcement, with many calling for boycotts of the sushi restaurant.

“Boycott @luckysushi.co they outbid them and are taking over! Do the right thing and let Bayside stay — this is a piece of Vancouver history,” added another person.

Dished reached out to Lucky Sushi Co. to learn whether they would be moving into the space or not.

“While our team is not in a position to confirm or deny what may be opening or what changes may be happening at the Bayside location, I can confirm that Lucky Sushi Co. is not expanding or moving into that space. Our focus is on improving our food and service at our current location,” wrote a representative of the restaurant in an email.

Additionally, the team has shared that they have received numerous threatening messages and calls to the store from upset patrons.

“We have suddenly been overwhelmed by negative and taunting reviews, DMs, emails, and phone calls. This has been deeply upsetting, and our staff are scared and feel unsafe,” wrote the restaurant.

As for what will end up moving into the former Bayside Lounge, Dished has received confirmation that it will remain a bar and lounge. Beyond that, more details have yet to be shared.

Dished also reached out to Bayside Lounge, which has yet to comment.
