Steakhouses often fall into one of two styles: upscale modern and old-school casual.

Lindy’s Steak House, 12249 W. Chinden Blvd., is proudly the latter.

Known for its Idaho-style finger steaks, the restaurant and bar was opened in 1996. Lindy’s was part of a west Boise “retail explosion” in that era, the Idaho Statesman observed in an article way back then.

So when the Lindy’s property was put up for sale this summer — for $1.5 million, including the liquor license — it might have raised eyebrows among regulars and other seasoned Idahoans.

What does it mean for the future of Lindy’s?

A buyer is under contract to purchase Lindy’s by the end of the year, said Jeffrey Hall, principal with Northwest Commercial Advisors. “It’s been under contract since almost the day we listed it,” he said.

New ownership would have the option to keep Lindy’s running, rebrand it as something fresh — or, essentially, any other possibility under the sun for the property, building and liquor license.

Idahoans will have to wait to find out.

For a taste of Boise history, now is a good time to visit the dining room for a Reuben sandwich or a slice of prime rib. And maybe a game of shuffleboard in the lounge.

Lindy’s is not the highest-rated restaurant in Boise, at 3.1 out of 5 stars on Yelp and 4.1 out of 5 on Google. But if you like it, you really like it.

Certainly, some longtime Boiseans do.

“I love the finger steaks!” a recent 5-star Yelp review exclaimed. “The salad with ranch dressing is fresh. If you’re too sophisticated or a picky eater, this might not be your vibe. I think it is delicious, and the cocktails are reasonably priced all day and mixed well. A+ in my book.”
