Food & Wine includes Portland pizzeria in list of 27 best US pizzas

Food & Wine magazine names the tomato confit pizza at Lovely’s Fifty Fifty on North Mississippi Avenue one of the best pizzas in the U.S. right now.

As Portland’s profile as a world-class pizza city grows, one of its most celebrated pizzerias has won a new plaudit.

Food & Wine⁠ magazine included Lovely’s Fifty Fifty on its list of “the 27 best pizzas in America right now,” published in its November issue. The collection of specific pies from restaurants across the country singled out Lovely’s tomato confit pizza.

“Think confit tomato with summer squash, orange agrumato, and edible flowers,” the magazine said.

Lovely’s Fifty Fifty, on North Mississippi Avenue, was opened in 2010 by Sarah Minnick and her sister Jane and emphasizes local ingredients, some of which are foraged by Sarah.

Sarah Minnick has received multiple James Beard Award nominations, and Lovely’s is frequently included in best-pizza lists for Portland and nationally. She was also a featured chef in the Netflix series “Chef’s Table” in 2022.

“You’re as likely to find Sarah Minnick in a forest foraging for mushrooms, dandelion greens, and flowers as you are behind her electric oven. That’s because she sees pizza as a platform for local ingredients,” Food & Wine said. “Her pizzas at Lovely’s Fifty Fifty are iconoclastic and express the terroir of the Pacific Northwest.”

Portland is in the middle of something of a pizza renaissance, with Lovely’s and other local mainstays like Ken’s Artisan Pizza and Nostrana⁠ winning national and international recognition.
