Just a few days after opening, Haldiram’s USA, the first U.S. restaurant from the Indian brand, unexpectedly closed its doors. The restaurant is at 7010 Preston Road, No. 240, in Frisco.

The restaurant opened Sunday, Oct. 11, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. From the start, large numbers of people came to eat at the restaurant, which served North Indian dishes and sold Haldiram’s products. Lines to get a table stretched to 45 minutes.

On Thursday, Oct. 15, Haldiram’s announced via social media that it was temporarily “closed for maintenance.”

Social media users have speculated about the reasons for the closure. But as of Tuesday, Oct. 20, there had been no official announcement further explaining the reason or confirming a date to resume operations. The News visited the restaurant, but company executives did not provide a statement.

The restaurant’s menu combines Indian street food, traditional dishes, desserts and a shop selling packaged products. Menu items included Choley Bhature, a leavened puffed bread served with chickpea masala with spices; a special Dahi Bhalla, lentil dumplings soaked in chilled sweet yogurt and topped with tamarind; and Amritsari Choley Kulcha, a layered potato-stuffed flatbread baked in a tandoor and served with chickpea curry and Amritsari chutney.

The brand traces its roots to 1937 in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The small shop, which initially served snacks, grew over the years into an international food brand selling snacks, cookies, savory mixes, prepared meals and frozen foods.

Today, the brand is present in more than 80 countries. Its first restaurant in the United States is the Frisco location.
