Usually, when you see the word “meatball” at an Italian restaurant, you have a pretty good idea of what you’re getting. However, this”meatball” in Somerset has feathers, and isn’t on the menu.

Ma Raffa’s in Somerset recently shared a photo of a wild turkey standing outside its entrance, looking like it was waiting for someone to take its order. Naturally, I had to find out what its deal was.

Turns out, it’s just a curious little fella without a name, so Ma Raffa’s invited its Facebook followers to help out for a chance to win a gift card. Within 24 hours, the name “Meatball” was chosen and Sherica Goldstein took home the prize. Honestly, for a turkey visiting an Italian restaurant, that’s pretty perfect.

How Meatball Got Its Name

When I called the Somerset location, they cleared up one detail: the winner was selected randomly. This wasn’t a vote for the best name or a judging panel debating turkey puns. Although, based on our conversation, that would have been entertaining.

While “Don Gobblioni” was favored by the staff at Ma Raffa’s, because apparently this turkey needed to have its own Godfather moment, I was drawn to the suggestion “Gravy.” Too dark?

The restaurant also confirmed that the turkey hadn’t been stopping by every day. This was a one-time visit, and the woman I spoke with suspected it came from the woods behind the houses across the street. With busy Route 138 right there, she expressed concern about it getting hit. So keep an eye out, Somerset; “Meatball” is just trying to survive the holidays.
