In her debut post on social media platform X, senior Congress leader and Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi shared a nostalgic reflection on her love story with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, offering a glimpse into her upcoming memoir, Belonging: A Journey of Love.

A Chance Encounter in Cambridge

Recalling how their path first crossed in Cambridge, England, Sonia Gandhi explained that she had been searching for places serving food closer to what she was accustomed to.

”Food in England in those days was awful. In those days, you didn’t have so many restaurants, you know, like you have today,” she recalled.

Her search led her to the Varsity Restaurant, a Greek eatery popular among European and Indian students. It was there that a mutual friend introduced her to Rajiv Gandhi, sparking an instant connection.

Instant Connection and Lasting Impression

Looking back at their initial meeting, Sonia Gandhi shared how deeply she was struck by Rajiv’s personality and warmth.

”When I first met him, I felt almost immediately that, you know, he was someone I would really love to be with. And, of course, I learned that it was the same for him,” she noted.

”He was a very gentle-looking person. Of course, he was very good-looking, but that gentleness came through. So that was something which really touched me and struck me. So that, of course, I’ll never forget,” she added.

The two developed a close friendship, attending parties, sightseeing, and student gatherings like a Valentine’s party together before marrying in 1968.

Memoir Release Date

Sharing the video post alongside archival photographs, Sonia Gandhi written: “In a small Greek restaurant in Cambridge my journey of love began. Rajiv and I created a world filled with love, laughter and memories. On 10th November, I share that world with you.”

Her memoir, Belonging: A Journey of Love, is scheduled to release worldwide on November 10, 2026, offering readers an intimate look into her personal journey, family life, and transition into politics.
