Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) stock closed at $32.91 on November 2, 2026. Rising 50% would put it near $49.37, above its highest close of the past year, $40.87. Getting there depends largely on whether Chipotle can win more orders. The stock has climbed that far before, rising 50% or more from a low to a later high inside a single year in 5 of the last 10 calendar years. Management is now pushing a type of order that makes up only a small share of Chipotle’s sales so far. What is that order, and is it selling yet?
Chipotle Plans To Take Catering National In 2027
Chipotle plans to begin rolling out catering nationally in the first quarter of 2027, management said on its October 28, 2026 earnings call. This catering initiative sits beside Chipotle Family Meals. Early results showed a step-up of over 30% in Family Meal sales, management said.
The push comes as Chipotle’s guests arrive in smaller groups, a shift management links to more of them ordering through Chipotle Rewards. Management expects smaller groups to keep weighing on comparable restaurant sales by roughly 100 basis points, and it named Family Meals among the items offsetting it.
How Big Could Group Orders Get For Chipotle?
Group orders are still a small part of the business. Catering and Family Meals together make up about 3% of Chipotle’s sales, management said. Chipotle’s revenue was $12.7 billion over the four quarters ended September 30, 2026. At that share, group orders come to roughly $380 million a year. Even fast growth would lift total sales only modestly at first.
Group orders aside, the share price appears to assume less from Chipotle than it once did. The stock returned 3.8% over the year to November 2, 2026, against 11.5% for the S&P 500. Its P/E at the end of September 2026 was the second lowest of the 40 quarter ends since late 2016. At 30.2 times earnings at the latest close, however, it is still above the 22.8 for the S&P 500.
What Has To Go Right For Chipotle?
More guests have to come through the door. Management was asked on the October 28 call what comparable sales growth Chipotle needs to steady its margins. With inflation near 3%, management agreed a gain of about 4% would be needed. It also said transactions at comparable restaurants need to grow about 1% just to offset the effect of opening new restaurants. Above that, about 40% of the extra sales flow through to profit, management said. In fiscal Q3 2026, those transactions rose 0.8%.
Management describes its plan, group occasions included, as a way to raise demand and says it is in its early days. October started harder. Management said trends softened in the first part of that month, in line with the wider industry, and that the company had since regained positive transactions. It expects comparable restaurant sales to rise around 2% in the fourth quarter. It expects its restaurant-level margin, its own measure, to land just under 22% for that quarter, roughly 150 basis points lower than a year earlier.
Transaction growth at comparable restaurants is the number to watch when Chipotle reports its fourth quarter, expected in February 2027.
