A drive-by shooting Sunday that left two men wounded outside a deli three blocks away from Yankee Stadium capped off an unusually violent week in the Bronx’s 44th Precinct, where eight people were shot in only seven days, cops said.
The eight people wounded between Sept. 7 and Sept. 13 bring the number of shooting victims in the 44th Precinct to 31 for the year, a 34% increase in just seven days, NYPD crime stats show.
Prior to last week, there were 23 people shot this year in the 44th Precinct, down 11% from the 25 people wounded in the same timeframe in 2025, according to crime stats current as of Sept. 6.
The two men wounded Sunday, aged 65 and 75, were playing dominoes outside the bodega on the corner of E. 157th St. and Gerard Ave. in Grand Concourse when a gunman opened fire around 6:08 p.m., police said.
“It was like seven shots. It came from a car, and they hit two senior citizens,” a 33-year-old woman, who witnessed the violence, told the Daily News.
The older victim was struck in his right hand, while the younger man was hit in his right thigh.
“They were innocent bystanders,” said the witness, who asked to remain anonymous. “That’s normal for around here. It was a drug thing.”
Medics rushed both men to Lincoln Hospital, where they’re expected to survive.
It was not immediately clear who the gunman was targeting.
Cops are hunting for multiple suspects spotted fleeing the scene in a car heading south on Walton Ave. There were no arrests.
About a half mile away at 1:11 a.m. that same day, two people were shot when a gunman opened fire on a crowd partying outside an Exterior St. apartment building near E. 150th St., cops said.
A 20-year-old woman fleeing the violence was struck in the left leg as she ran, while a 19-year-old man was hit in his right shoulder.
Medics rushed the woman to Lincoln Hospital, where the wounded man was also treated after arriving there by private means. Both victims are expected to survive.
A 49-year-old man was shot in the left thigh inside Rev. T. Wendell Foster Park near Jerome Ave. and E. 165th St. in Highbridge around 2:14 a.m. that Wednesday, cops said.
Medics rushed that victim to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition.
Cops are searching for three men spotted fleeing the scene on foot. There were no arrests.
That Monday, three people were wounded — one critically — when a shooter opened fire on a University Ave. food market near Marriam Ave. in Highbridge around 10:53 p.m., cops said.
A 43-year-old man was shot in the head, a 52-year-old woman was grazed in her leg, and a 65-year-old woman was shot in the leg, police said.
All three were rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where the man was listed in critical condition. The wounded women are expected to survive.
There were no arrests.
Shootings are down 12% citywide, with 449 incidents this year compared to 510 during the same period in 2025, stats show. The number of people shot throughout the five boroughs is down 15%, with 545 shooting victims in 2026 as compared to 641 the year before.
