Last week, the Mississippi Department of Health had only confirmed two cases of the parasitic intestinal illness cyclosporiasis. Five more cases have been confirmed this week bringing the total number of confirmed cases to seven.
The parasite has been linked to mainly lettuce from the leading global producer of salads and healthy fresh foods, Taylor Farms, which distributes to both grocery stores and restaurants across the country.
Although the general public has blamed Taco Bell for the outbreak as some have filed lawsuits against the restaurant, Taylor Farms also distributes to restaurants like McDonald’s, Chipotle, Burger King, Subway, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, KFC, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, and some local restaurants.
Since the outbreak occurred, many restaurants have put safety measures in place to ensure their guests safety while others have taken lettuce and other produce completely off the menu for the time being.
Charles Frazier, owner of Weidmann’s Restaurant and Bar, explained to Twin States what his restaurant is doing to help ensure their guests safety.
“We do have some guidelines that have been issued by the Department of Health, and that is to really monitor where we’re getting our produce from, and we’re also keeping very meticulous records as far as what’s coming in and who it’s coming from. We’re also making sure that we’re monitoring our staff and also monitoring feedback from guests, because we’re obligated to report any issues that we have to the Department of Health.”
As more cases of cyclosporiasis are being reported, restaurants are continuing to take the necessary precautions to help reduce the spread of the parasite.
