LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Residents of areas of Northern Nevada who have been affected by the Bug and Stallion fires and lost food purchased with SNAP benefits because of them can get replacement benefits, the state said Monday.
According to the Department of Human Services, around 3,700 Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipents have been affected by the Bug and Stallion fires in Northern Nevada. That number is expected to grow.

Now, the state says that residents of Washoe County and the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony who have lost food purchased with SNAP benefits because of the fires or related power outages can request replacement SNAP benefits.
“The Division of Social Services recognizes the significant losses Nevadans are experiencing as a result of the Bug and Stallion fires and the impacts that follow,” Deputy Administrator Kelly Cantrelle said. “SNAP benefits help families put food on the table, and losing food purchased with those benefits creates an additional burden during an already difficult time.”
Those affected SNAP households must report food loss within 10 days and provide verification of the fire damage or power outage.
All requests will then be reviewed to determine eligibility and the amount of benefits that may be provided. SNAP recipients affected by the fires or power outages can report their food loss by visiting a local DSS office or calling (775) 684-7200.
The Division of Social Services continues to review federal SNAP disaster flexibilities and will provide additional information as it becomes available.
