LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) – The Hunger Task Force of La Crosse is one of the many food banks across the state that is receiving assistance from the Food Security and Wisconsin Products Grant Program.
Wisconsin is rolling out $5 million to help food assistance organizations purchase healthy food directly from Wisconsin producers.
The program is designed to help organizations provide more healthy food options to the people they serve, without adding to families’ grocery costs.
Organizations that receive grants can use the money to buy food directly from Wisconsin farmers and producers.
Officials say the relief is much needed as organizations like the Hunger Task Force of La Crosse is facing rising demand and shrinking donations.
“Everybody is working with higher prices, things like that. That’s why this grant is so critical at this point for us to be able to purchase food items that are healthy, going to support our state, and make sure community families get fed,” said Shelly Fortner, Hunger Task Force of La Crosse Executive Director.
This is the second year in a row the state is giving this grant out to food banks.
The funding from this grant will be for the 2027 calendar year.
Eligible nonprofits have until Oct. 1 to apply for the funding.
