Portland’s food scene has no shortage of places worth talking about, but one waterfront restaurant just got a pretty major national shoutout.
Douro, located at 110 Thames Street in Portland’s East End, has been named to The New York Times’ 2026 Restaurant List, featuring 50 of the publication’s favorite restaurants in America right now. Even more notable? Douro is the only restaurant in Maine to make this year’s list.
A Taste of Portugal on Portland’s Waterfront
Douro opened in October 2025, so it hasn’t even been around for a full year. The seafood-forward restaurant and wine bar takes inspiration from Portugal and the Atlantic, with a menu built around fresh seafood, shareable plates, Portuguese wines and cocktails.
Think local oysters, grilled octopus, salt cod croquettes and cataplana, a Portuguese seafood stew, all served in a bright waterfront space that feels very Portland while still giving you a little taste of Portugal.
The New York Times Takes Notice
According to The New York Times, 16 writers and editors traveled around the country for this year’s list, ultimately choosing 50 restaurants. The list isn’t ranked, but Douro earned its place for the way it brings together coastal Portugal and coastal Maine, with just as much attention paid to local vegetables as seafood.
For a restaurant that opened less than a year ago, that’s a pretty impressive way to put itself, and Portland, on the national dining map.
