STYLE
A roadside eatery serving Mexican-Asian fusion dishes in a spacious dining room with exposed brick and colorful accents.
THE SCOOP
Chef/owner Jose Lorenzo’s love for combining Mexican and Asian flavors began in childhood. Few markets near his family’s New Jersey home carried Mexican ingredients, so his mother began cooking dishes from their Puebla heritage, using Asian ingredients because they were more readily available. In 2023, Lorenzo opened AXO, offering a menu inspired by Mexican, Chinese and Japanese flavors.
Birria egg rolls, Tijuana asada fries and street corn are standout starters. Tacos come in several varieties, from classic carnitas to al pastor, which gets an Asian twist thanks to Korean red-chili flakes (gochugaru) in the marinade. Entrées include birria ramen, salmon mac and cheese, and a ribeye rice bowl. The wing options are also worth trying; There’s a flavor for every craving: spicy-sweet chipotle honey, zesty tequila lime and tropical mango habanero. There are a couple of meatless dishes: veggie nachos and veggie tacos. Dessert options include tres leches cake, flan and churros.
PRO TIP
