LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – The South Texas Food Bank (STFB) is spending September raising awareness about hunger as part of a nationwide campaign known as Hunger Action Month.

Sofia Ramos with STFB said the campaign’s main goal is to raise awareness of food insecurity, both nationwide and locally.

“Hunger Action Month is a nationwide campaign, and the main topic is to raise awareness of food insecurity here in the nation. For the South Texas Food Bank, it is a great opportunity to not only talk about hunger, but to actually show people that they can fight it with us,” Ramos said.

Ramos said there are several ways community members can participate during the month.

“There are a lot of ways to get involved. You can either volunteer at the South Texas Food Bank. You can always wear orange, which is Hunger Action Month’s official color, to raise awareness. You can always host a food drive at your local shops, church, community organizations, etc.,” Ramos said.

The food bank is hosting two volunteer days open to the public this month, on Sept. 16 and Sept. 29. Ramos said people can call or message the food bank to register and select a time slot.

Volunteers on those days will pack food for the organization’s food distributions, which are held every Friday. The food bank is also hosting a special pop-up distribution for the public on Sept. 25.

“So you will be packing out food for the food distributions that we also are having. We’re going to have them every Friday, and we’re also hosting a special pop-up distribution for everyone on September 25th,” Ramos said.

She added that the organization currently has proclamations recognizing Hunger Action Month in Dimmit County, Kinney County and Val Verde County.

People can find more information at the STFB website, on the food bank’s social media pages or by calling 956-726-3120.
