JACKSON, Mich. (News 10) – The south side of Jackson could be getting its first full-service grocery store in more than 50 years after the city struck a one-dollar land deal with a Flint-based non-profit.
The Jackson City Council voted unanimously to sell the land at the intersection of Cooper and Biddle streets on Jackson’s south side to accommodate the grocery store.
Pamela Holbrook has lived in the city of Jackson for 25 years. She said it takes about an hour to walk to Walmart or Meijer’s, and about an hour by bus.
“It’d be awesome around here because there’s hardly anything around here – It’s Meijer’s or Walmart. Once in a while, you can get some at the Dollar Generals, some of them,” Holbrook said.
Rae Thiry, who lives near Jackson, said she hopes some green space can be preserved.
“I think there’s a lot of green space behind us here. And if a little bit of that could be preserved, I think it would be a very happy medium for the area to have a little parcel of green still in this very industrialized area,” Thiry said.
Jackson City Council Member Arlene Robinson said the need for a grocery store on the south side has been present since she joined the council in 2013.
“There will be some green space around the store – but to have everything that we need to provide food, fruit and vegetables for our family would be wonderful,” Robinson said.
It could be two to three years before the store is fully operational.
