Food Bank highlights hunger relief during Hunger Action Month
More than 278,000 people receive help each month through the food bank’s network.
HARRISBURG, Pa. —
September is Hunger Action Month, and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is using the month to remind communities across central Pennsylvania that fighting hunger starts close to home.
The food bank is joining hunger-relief organizations and community partners across the country for the annual campaign, this year centered around the theme “Nourishing Neighbors Together.”
The goal is simple: raise awareness about food insecurity and encourage people to get involved, whether that’s through volunteering, donating, advocating or simply learning more about hunger in their own communities.
In the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s 27-county service area, 1 in 8 people faces food insecurity. That includes one in five children.
More than 278,000 people receive help each month through the food bank’s network of hunger-relief partners.
Throughout September, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will be taking that message into communities across the region.
Events and activities are planned in Centre, York, Lebanon and Columbia counties, along with the cities of Williamsport and Lancaster. The food bank is also participating in county proclamations, outreach efforts and advocacy activities throughout the month.
Organizers say the events are designed to give people an opportunity to better understand hunger in their communities and find ways to help.
For the food bank, that means emphasizing that addressing hunger isn’t something one organization can do alone.
Volunteers, food pantries, community organizations, donors and local advocates all play a role in making sure people have consistent access to nutritious food.
And while Hunger Action Month puts an added spotlight on the issue in September, the need continues throughout the year.
The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank says the month is ultimately about bringing people together to make sure neighbors don’t have to choose between putting food on the table and meeting other basic needs.
