MADISON, Wis. — Bikes for Kids Wisconsin wants to show that you don’t need a car to deliver meals to those in need.
The organization is partnering with local food pantries, including the River Food Pantry, to launch a new ‘Meals on 2 Wheels’ program which will use e-cargo bikes with trailers to deliver groceries to those in need.
Bikes for Kids first tested the idea last fall as a pilot program that used bikes to complete the final mile of a food delivery. The group said that the pilot program showed bikes were just as efficient as car delivery and allowed carriers to reach a person’s door without having to worry about parking issues.
“Not only does this partnership increase the number of deliveries we’ll be able to make each week thereby increasing access to food in our community, it also reduces transportation barriers to healthy food for underserved households in the Madison region,” River Delivers coordinator Jamie Midthun said. “We also see important relationships blossoming out of the delivery model versus the impersonal experience of shopping for groceries.”
Bikes for Kids will officially launch the program on Tuesday with a 10 a.m. celebration at the bike center at 354 Coyier Lane in Madison. The program will run through October.
