BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Carver Jones Market officially opened its new grocery store in Titusville on Wednesday morning, ending a nearly three-year stretch without a full-service grocery store in the neighborhood.
The store is located in the former Save-A-Lot on Dennison Avenue, which closed in 2023 and sat empty, leaving part of Birmingham’s District 6 without a full grocery store.
Customer Maxine DeGraffenreid said she came to the store as soon as she heard it was opening.
“When I heard they were opening today and I said, ‘right around the corner? I can’t wait to go!’ I just got off work and I said ‘I’ve got to stop by and see, all the great deals they have.’ And I ran over here,” DeGraffenreid said.
Birmingham District 6 Councilwoman Crystal Smitherman said the closure of the previous store left a gap in the neighborhood.
“That kind of left a big void just kind of the way they left unexpectedly. And so the city we’ve been trying to scramble and find somebody and so Carver Jones was such a blessing to come,” Smitherman said.
What’s inside
Shoppers will find fresh produce and a full meat counter, restocked daily.
“If I need some eggs or anything I can just come right up here and get them and go home!” DeGraffenreid said.
A pharmacy is coming to the store through a new partnership with Citizen’s Express Pharmacy.
Shelf space is also set aside for locally owned Alabama brands. The store will offer Discount Tuesdays, providing 10% off for seniors, military members, teachers, and college students.
Smitherman said the store also supports job development.
“Not only is it providing fresh food, but also workforce development as well,” Smitherman said.

The company said it is hiring cashiers, stockers, and workers for the produce, meat, deli, and delivery departments. Carver Jones Market said it is looking to fill those jobs from the neighborhoods that the store serves.
Carver Jones Market plans to bring the same model to other Birmingham neighborhoods that have lost their grocery stores.
“I’ve been looking for one ever since I moved over here and they finally put one right here, I’m so glad they did,” DeGraffenreid said.
The store is open seven days a week from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
