Jackson grocery stores see surge in shoppers as winter storms approach
JACKSON, Miss. —
With freezing temperatures and icy conditions expected across Mississippi, Jackson grocery stores are experiencing a surge of shoppers preparing for the storms by stocking up on essentials.
“We did have to call some more employees in to help out with the trucks. Also, on my front end to make sure the customers get checked in and out properly and fast,” said Anderson Haynes, Piggly Wiggly store manager. “We also have extra backstock in the back of the store.”
Inside the Piggly Wiggly on Meadowbrook Road, essentials like bread and bottled water are quickly disappearing from the shelves. Some local shoppers have made multiple trips to different stores in search of items.
“There was absolutely no bread in Jackson. I went to about five or six stores. So, this morning, I have a no-name brand. I cannot find my favorite honey wheat, but I’ll settle for whatever,” said shopper Jessie Chipolin-Wright. “Right now, I am doing semi-panic buying just in case.”
Store managers assured shoppers that shelves will be restocked soon, as deliveries continue to arrive.
“We had a delivery (Saturday) morning, and we’re anticipating another delivery with some meat items and some items on Monday and some more on Tuesday,” Haynes said.
Haynes hopes the winter storms don’t lead to supply issues.
“We do have that worry because we’ve got to think about it. Deliveries come from out of the Jackson area, out of the Mississippi area sometimes,” Haynes said.
Haynes advised shoppers to stock up on non-perishable items.
“The canned goods won’t go bad if we have electrical problems or electrical outages. So having canned goods, the bread, and things like that would be something nice to have. And your water also,” Haynes said.
