SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – A new Mexican supermarket opened Friday on the corner of Olive and Western avenues, providing fresh groceries to South Bend’s west side.
Mor Mex features fresh produce including coconuts, bananas and plantains, along with a frozen section containing arepas and maduros. The store includes an aisle of Spanish treats, a wall of chiles and a meat section.
“They had a variety of Mexican groceries that you can’t get at the regular stores,” said Paloma Garza, a shopper. “The meat looks great.”
The supermarket also houses a taqueria with seating for families to dine on Mexican cuisine.
Brandon Rocha, another customer, said he purchased carnitas during his visit. “You see them every now and then, but you don’t see them this good anywhere,” Rocha said.
Rocio Rodriguez, shopping with Rocha, said they found tunas at the store that they hadn’t located elsewhere.
Max Garza, who ordered rice and tacos from the taqueria, said he would return for the food.
South Bend Mayor James Mueller said the store addresses food access needs following the recent closure of the Kroger on Western Avenue.
“There’s been a lot of talk about food access in the past several weeks,” Mueller said. “This is truly a wonderful resource here in a part of town that needs access to fresh produce and high quality products.”
The store is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Parking is currently available behind the building, with plans to expand parking across the street.
