MERRIAM, Kan. (KCTV) – The Merriam City Council on Monday approved plans for a new Aldi grocery store in the Merriam Town Center.
The new grocery store is part of a larger redevelopment project. Aldi will take over the storefront currently occupied by OfficeMax.
Merriam Mayor Bob Pape said the overall redevelopment project is estimated to cost about $30 million, with Aldi’s portion costing approximately $5.3 million.
Project funding and design
The project will be funded through a Capital Improvement District, which will add a 1% fee to purchases made in the Town Center. The fee will not apply to groceries.
Pape said the goal of the redevelopment is to make the area more walkable, bike-friendly, and inviting. The plans include adding green space and potential new restaurant or retail spots.
“The fact that we’re getting an Aldi excites us as a council,” Pape said. “We did surveys, and the community was willing to even invest up to millions of dollars as incentives in order to try to get a grocery store to come back to Merriam.”
Project timeline
As for the timeline of the project, Pape said he hopes the Aldi will open within a year, noting that crews only need to complete interior reconstruction.
Pape added that he hopes a nearby Trader Joe’s will open within a couple of months.
