CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (KIII) — Rising beef prices are forcing some Texas barbecue restaurants to remove items like brisket and ribs from their menus.
David Page, owner of Hoegemeyer’s Barbeque Barn, said beef prices have gone up about 40 percent over the last two years.
“The beef prices have gone up … and that is a killer,” Page said.
According to Page, the beef industry is facing multiple challenges.
“A lot of restaurants have discontinued some products just because it’s so cost-prohibitive to keep on the menu,” Page said.
Butter’s Barbeque in Sinton announced in a recent Facebook post that it will no longer serve brisket, one of its staple dishes.
Customers weigh in
Eric Escamillo, a customer, said it’s important to support local businesses during the price increases.
“Very unfortunate and a reality of the situation that we’re in… we all have to find a way to continue and help others to stay in the community,” Escamillo said.
Restaurant owners face tough choices
William Paul Sissamis, owner of Silverado Smokehouse, said the rising cost of beef has put businesses in a difficult position. He said keeping expensive menu items would require charging customers more.
Sissamis said he would rather temporarily remove beef ribs from his menu than raise prices.
Restaurant owners also say high diesel prices have been driving up the cost of food.
