Jason Momoa was born in Honolulu. Although his parents divorced when he was a baby and he was raised by his mother in Iowa, Momoa began returning to Hawaii to spend summers with his father at age 12. According to People, the actor developed a love of the ocean during those formative years. It’s no secret that Hawaii has remained a big part of his life.
Momoa recently spoke to Travel & Leisure for an exclusive interview and said this about Hawaii: “There’s certain foods, there’s the way the water feels for me, the way that the sand feels for me, the way the air smells, how my skin feels here—it’s just a deep connection.”
The actor also shared his favorite places in the Aloha State.

Mokule’ia Beach, Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii – July 29, 2018: Just like paradise, last rays of sunlight over Mokule’ia Beach. This beach is a beautiful white sand beach found on Oahu North shore west of Wailua. Mokule’ia is well known and a very popular destination among windsurfers. The nice sand and shallow reef also attract people seeking other water activities. Mokule’ia beach was one of the Lost’s filming locations. This beach was the site where the plane crashes and where our famous group of 48 crash survivors are gathered around the wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815 which rested on the beach.
Momoa told Travel & Leisure his favorite beach is Makaha, located on O’ahu’s west side. “Pretty much everything on the west side is home, but Makaha is probably my favorite beach in the world,” said the actor. He reminisced about spending time there, climbing rocks, and playing on the shore when he was young. “I love Waimea just because it’s like being a kid.” The actor also said he has fond memories of the beaches at Mokule’ia.
In a previous interview with CN Traveler, Momoa also spoke about his love for the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oʻahu, which offers authentic experiences such as lūʻau buffets, hands-on activities, and cultural demonstrations.
Where Jason Momoa spends the most time in Hawaii
Momoa told the outlet that when he’s in Hawaii, he spends most of his time staying on Kauai, which he called romantic. He said it’s one of the places he recommends to first-time visitors to the islands. It’s hard to argue with the suggestion. Kauai is renowned for its dramatic landscape, featuring towering peaks, rugged cliffs, lush green valleys, and pristine white sandy beaches.

You can’t go wrong with a Hawaiian vacation; however, Momoa says each island has “its own spectacular style.” If visitors want a lively experience and the option to go to the city, Momoa suggests O’ahu. He also says that Maui is a big favorite for many tourists.
After you’ve explored O’ahu and Maui, Momoa suggests spending time in Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi.
He says visiting an active volcano on one of the islands is a really special experience. He revealed to the outlet that he felt a unique energy on his first visit to the Big Island and that he feels a spiritual power.

Momoa told Travel & Leisure he advises first-time visitors to sample traditional dishes such as kalua pig, lau lau, and his personal favorite, poi. In an interview with CN Traveler, he also mentioned that he’s a fan of spam musubi.
