ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Kendrick McFarland was shot while working security at the Carrs grocery store on Minnesota Drive and Northern Lights Boulevard Sunday, Sept. 7.
McFarland said he had been working that morning since about 5 a.m., mostly checking receipts at the door, when around 8:30 a.m. he asked a man to present his receipt, at which point the man pulled a gun and shot him.
“[I] don’t know the gentleman,” McFarland said. “The gentleman don’t know me, I don’t guess. We don’t know each other and it was just a crazy turn of events.”
Only about three weeks into the job, McFarland said he was working for a private security contractor that the grocery chain hires to monitor the store when the shooting occurred.
“The gentleman was coming out,” McFarland said. “The new program that we started as the security company was just checking the receipts on the way out as they come out with their products.
“And that conversation led to the dispute.”
McFarland said he grabbed the gun in an effort to defend himself, at which point his memory is hazy, but at some point, the man fired, hitting McFarland in the abdomen.
“Don’t know how it got there so quick,” McFarland said. “Actually, kind of slow motion, but very quick in reality, it happened. Next thing I know, I was in the back of an ambulance with a bullet wound.”
Fortunately, the injuries McFarland sustained were non-life-threatening, though he did say they have exacerbated previous health issues in that area of his body.
After over a week in the hospital, McFarland has been released, though he is still recovering and not looking to return to that line of work again.
“I think I’m for sure retired from security,” McFarland said. “I don’t think that’s something I want to look into anymore.”
APD detained a suspect at the scene of the shooting, though no charges have been filed as of Wednesday, according to an APD spokesperson. The investigation is ongoing.
