It’s called the Common Ground Fair, but its unique vibe makes it anything but common.
Maine’s Common Ground Fair Doesn’t Have Carnival Rides and Games
I still remember the first time I went because I expected carnival rides, games, and doughboys.

Instead, I found sheep, herding dogs, chickens, an amazing amount of information about agriculture and sustainability, and the most incredible food offerings I’d ever found at something called a ‘fair.’
The Common Ground Fair in Unity, Maine Emphasizes Sustainable Rural Living
The Maine Organic Farmers and Growers Association, which organizes the Common Ground, describes it as a ‘celebration of rural living,’ emphasizing ‘vibrant communities, sustainable living, and local economies, while highlighting organic agriculture.’
A walk around the fairgrounds will include plenty of animals and agricultural demonstrations.
You can find information about agriculture, wastewater disposal, even blacksmithing.
Then there are the artisan tents, filled with local vendors selling handmade jewelry, artwork, textiles, furniture…you name it. And it’s all beautiful.
A special children’s area features Vegetable Garden Parades (kids dressed as vegetables) every day at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm, lots of fun educational activities, and entertainment.
Maine’s Common Ground Takes Fair Food to a Whole New, Delicious Level
Maybe my favorite part of the Common Ground Fair is the food. All vendors must promote organic agriculture and serve organic meals whenever possible.
While you may find things like French fries, you could also find falafels, Asian rice bowls, wild blueberry crisp, turkey legs, and more.
One thing you won’t find at the Common Ground Fair is caffeine, so have your coffee before you arrive, and enjoy a hot cup of spiced cider while you’re there.
The Common Ground Fair will be held September 25th to 27th at the Unity Fairgrounds. Find a daily schedule on the event’s website.
