Walmart is probably what comes to mind for many Missourians when thinking about where to find the cheapest groceries.
While the retailer certainly has a reputation when it comes to affordability, a new study from Consumer Reports shows that may not always be the case.
The study compared prices on baskets of commonly bought items at popular grocery chains in six regionally representative cities — Boston, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Los Angeles/Southern California and Virginia Beach — with those of Walmart’s.
Consumer Reports found six grocers out of a possible 34 had better prices than Walmart on average — and two of them have locations in Missouri.

What grocery stores are the most affordable?
Here’s what grocery stores in Missouri cost less than Walmart, on average:
Costco Wholesale (21.4% cheaper)
Four other stores, which don’t have any Missouri locations, also ranked cheaper, on average:
BJ’s Wholesale Club (21% cheaper)
What grocery stores cost more than Walmart?
Walmart was, however, less expensive than 28 stores nationwide. Stores with Missouri locations include:
Target (5.9% more expensive)
Food 4 Less (9% more expensive)
Kroger (14.8% more expensive)
Save A Lot (19.3% more expensive)
Trader Joe’s (24.6% more expensive)
Whole Foods (39.7% more expensive)

What about Price Chopper, Schnucks or Hy-Vee?
Regional chains like Price Chopper, Schnucks or Hy-Vee weren’t included in Consumer Reports’ study.
A similar study conducted by NetCredit in 2025 found that Kansas City-based grocer Price Chopper was the cheapest grocery store in the state, with prices 18.5% cheaper than the state average. The study also found Hy-Vee’s prices were 4.3% cheaper than the average.
