BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama has moved into a new warehouse off Lakeshore Parkway, a space the organization says will help it feed more people across the state.
The food bank said food insecurity rates rise every year. Last year, the food bank provided 20 million meals across its 12-county footprint, but an estimated 48 million meals are still needed across the state.

The new warehouse has 150,000 square feet of space. Nicole Williams, CEO of the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, said the old space had run out of room.
“The old space, we were just running out of space,” Williams said.
Williams said efficiency was the goal for the new facility. The food bank visited 10 foodbanks across the country for inspiration before building the new warehouse.
“Built this really for efficiency so we could move more food in and out. It’s a lot more convenient for our partners to pick up from this location,” Williams said.
Williams said food insecurity rates have risen since the pandemic, and more people are seeking help as costs increase.
“They’re paying increased gas prices or increased cost for food. Throw in a medical bill or something like that and sometimes people don’t have the income to pay for food for their families,” Williams said.

Kathryn Strickland, with Feeding America, said the impact of the new building comes from what happens inside it.
“While these walls of this building are very impressive, what really matters is what happens between these walls. So every pallet that’s moved, every mobile pantry that is packed, every volunteer that’s sorting donations, all of that is bigger than food,” Strickland said.
The new location includes a walk-in cooler, a walk-in freezer, and more space for volunteers. It is designed for an easier flow of food through the warehouse.
Williams said feeding more people is what she is most looking forward to.
“Honestly, feeding more people. The need is great, and the people in our community really need us,” Williams said.
The food bank welcomes donations that can help complete a meal, like canned goods.
