FAIRFAX, Vt. (WCAX) – Nan’s Deli and Grocery Mobil was torn down Thursday after it went up in flames for the second day in a row.
Fire crews initially responded to Nan’s Deli and Mobil station Wednesday, knocking down a fire early that morning. Then, around 2 a.m. Thursday, crews were called back to the scene for a second blaze. Fire officials say they believe the original fire rekindled overnight.

Nan’s is a central part of the Fairfax community. In a post to Facebook Wednesday, the store wrote, “Nan’s was a place for family and friends, old faces new faces. We love you Fairfax.”
Andrew, an employee at Nan’s Deli, said he couldn’t believe what was happening.
“It was more connected to the community than anything else was. I got to know most of the people in this town. And there are so many people that I’ve got to meet, friends that I made. Just camaraderie,” Andrew said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fire officials say the building’s structure made fighting the fire more difficult than usual.
“This building was a very challenging building for us. With the building construction, they had a number of additions, so we had issues getting to all the seats and pockets of fire,” said Micah Genzlinger, Fairfax fire chief.
The family who owns the store said their insurance representatives were on site evaluating the damage, but it is too early to say whether they will rebuild.
