JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – What do residents do when they need groceries and their regular grocery store suddenly closes its doors?
That’s an answer people living in South Jackson are now left to figure out.
This comes after residents received news that the Food Depot will soon close its doors, creating a big inconvenience for many people.
With the store closing, dozens of workers will now be without jobs this holiday season.
The store sits at the intersection of West McDowell Road and Terry Road in South Jackson.
Customers like Rhonda Benson stopped by the store on Tuesday and made one last stroll to buy groceries.
“This is the only grocery store in the neighborhood,” said Benson, who shops at the Food Depot. “It means a lot to this community because there are no places around that’s close by to shop, you have to go to Byram or to Kroger in Pearl.”
Many people rely on this store because it’s the only affordable grocery store they can easily get to.
“I come by here like two or three times a month,” said Tamara Bryant, who’s upset that the store is closing.
Bryant said the store’s closing will actually cost her more money.
Not only are the prices lower than at most other grocery stores, but the store is also not far from her home.
“Things are already expensive as it is with food, now you got to go further, spending more gas,” Bryant said.
At this time, there’s still no word on why the store is shutting down.
However, we do know it’s going to hit a lot of families hard.
In fact, residents living at the Blue Haven Villas live a short distance from Food Depot.
Some of them moved to the apartments just to be close to the store.
Now that it’s closing, many of them are scrambling to see how they’ll get their groceries for the Thanksgiving holiday.
“Some people, they don’t have transportation, and this is like a walking distance store for them, if they’re able to walk, some are not able to walk,” said Palashia Conner, who is devastated about the store’s closing. “I’ve actually seen some people pushing a cart just to be able to make it to the store, so I think it will be devastating for them to close it.”
This store has been a staple in South Jackson since 2012.
At this time, there’s no official date on when the store will close.
We’re told it’ll be sometime in early December.
We reached out to the owners of the store and are still waiting to hear back.
