ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Despite the winter weather and slick roads, some people were still out and about in our hometowns Sunday morning.
Orange Avenue was plowed early and often Sunday and was in better shape than most main roads. Despite the winter weather, some people still made the trip to Waffle House for a nice, hot meal.
“Waffle House is just one of our favorite breakfast spots to come to, and it was really just to check to see how bad it is. Because we know if Waffle House closes, it’s probably pretty bad,” said Jaylen Snyder, who lives in Daleville.
Leonard Rhodes lives in Daleville and said he didn’t have any issues making the drive to Waffle House.
“I like their breakfast. I was hungry. It took me ten minutes to clean my windows and warm my truck up, then I was ready to roll,” said Rhodes.
People coming from Botetourt County to Roanoke said the main roads were passable, but most side roads weren’t touched.
“If your tires weren’t in the best shape, it’d be tough to drive. For me personally, though, in a truck it’s been ok, but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on and to take your time when you’re going to places,” said Snyder.
Frank Stebbins lives in Cloverdale and said the main roads in Botetourt weren’t much different from Orange Avenue.
“It was about the same as these roads. They’re in pretty good shape, really, not good shape but passable shape. I think VDOT and all of them are doing the best they can,” said Stebbins.
Stebbins loaded the back of his truck with wood and cinder blocks so he wouldn’t get stuck in the snow.
“That makes the truck go. You’ve got to have weight to go. Even four-wheel drives, you’ve got to have weight for the truck to get its traction and go,” he said.
In Downtown Roanoke, Texas Tavern was also open for business on Sunday. Its owner says the restaurant prides itself on always being open.
“We try to stay open because the community knows that we’re open. It’s a place where they can come get a hot bowl of chili, a cup of coffee, warm up, and get something good to eat when a lot of other places are closed. The last time we closed for weather was in 1993,” said Texas Tavern Owner Matt Bullington.
Bullington said Texas Tavern had a pretty steady flow of customers despite the weather on Sunday morning.
He thanked fire, police, and EMS crews for their work on Sunday, as well as all the crews who have been working to clear the roads so people can get around safely.
