WinCo Foods has discussed plans to open a store in Cheyenne, Wyo., according to local reports, which would mark the low-price retailer’s debut in that state.
The reports follow other reports earlier this year that Boise, Idaho-based WinCo was also planning to enter Colorado with its first stores there.
In a column posted on the Cheyenne municipal website, Cheyenne Councilman Mark Rinne said the city has annexed about 17 acres of land for a WinCo grocery store. The store would be located near a Sam’s Club, he said.
Official plans for the site have not yet been submitted to the city, but the Cheyenne Planning and Development Department held a pre-application meeting with WinCo officials several months ago, according to a report in the Wyoming Tribune Eagle. The city this month approved a re-zoning of the area described in city filings as the “WinCo Subdivision.”
A spokesperson for WinCo could not be reached for comment on the company’s plans for a potential store in Wyoming.
Other grocery stores in the Cheyenne market include King Soopers, Albertsons, Safeway, Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage, Sprouts and Walmart.
On its website, WinCo said it is opening a store on Sept. 29 in San Tan Valley, Ariz., and said news about another new store in Wichita Falls, Texas, was forthcoming. The website does not yet mention plans for stores in Wyoming or Colorado.
WinCo purchases third Colorado site
Meanwhile WinCo has also purchased a former Jax Outdoor Gear, Farm & Ranch store in Loveland, Colo., for $7.6 million, according to local reports. That appears to be the third Colorado location that WinCo has planned.
Earlier this year WinCo purchased land for two other Colorado stores, one each in the Denver suburb of Thornton and in the town of Firestone, about 30 miles north of Denver. The Loveland site is about 60 miles north of Denver and 60 miles south of Cheyenne.
WinCo currently operates 142 stores in 10 states: Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Texas and Utah, according to ScrapeHero. The employee-owned company has been expanding rapidly, adding about 50 stores in the last 10 years.
