DETROIT – Two Detroit restaurants have received some big national praise as they have been listed alongside some of the top eateries in the country.
One is a newly opened taqueria and the other is known for its Polish cuisine.
They are listed in the New York Times 50 Favorite Restaurants in the United States list.
One of them is Rose’s Fine Food at 10551 E. Jefferson Ave., which used to be an old-fashioned diner, but the owner reopened it last year as a Polish restaurant.
The only other Michigan restaurant to make the New York Times list is Tacos Wuey at 3970 Vernor Hwy.
For its 2026 list, the New York Times says it sent a scouting team of 16 people to dine at restaurants all over the country, “We ate in all kinds of places, from small-town Wisconsin to downtown Manhattan.”
The New York Times says its 50 restaurants are not ranked and if one was on a list in previous years, it won’t be on this new one.
“Many have opened since we finished reporting last year’s list. Some are just weeks old, already great but very much still becoming themselves. Others are decades old, and perfectly seasoned.”
The owner of Rose’s told WXYZ-TV Detroit that she was surprised when learning her restaurant made the list.
“They don’t tell you. They did ask us for some information, but they didn’t tell us what it was for,” Molly Mitchell told WXYZ. “So it was definitely a surprise and a very pleasant one. I’m very excited.”
Chef Eddie Vargas from Tacos Wuey says he’s proud his family’s recipes have received this recognition from the New York Times.
“Food runs in my family,” Chef Vargas told WXYZ. “My grandparents were taqueros in Mexico, Jalisco, so I’ve always cooked at home.”
Tacos Wuey is open Monday – Thursday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Rose’s is open Wednesday through Monday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. It’s closed on Tuesdays.
