OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The Douglas County Health Department has launched its new Food Handler Training Program, developed in response to updates to the Omaha Municipal Code approved in August 2025.
Under the ordinance, employees of food establishments are now required to complete food safety training and pass an exam to obtain a food handler certificate within 30 days of employment.
3 certification levels available
DCHD has partnered with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln to develop the online training portal divided into three certification levels. The level of training required will be determined by the job duties of the employee.
To help determine the appropriate certification level, a Decision Tree is available on the Douglas County Food Handler Certification website.
Training costs $20, valid for 2 years
Food handler certifications must be obtained through training provided by DCHD. The training is initially offered in English and Spanish, with additional languages to be added as resources allow. The cost is $20, and certifications are valid for two years.
