GREEN BAY– In 2001, when Nora Grajeda made the tough decision to move from her home of Guatemala to the United States, she was a teacher and had no plans of running her own business.
Her number one priority was forging a better life for herself and her children. Just six years later, her ethnic supermarket Mi Favorita came to fruition. Now today, her family was there to cheer her on as Mi Favorita opened a second location on the West side of Green Bay.
She was kind enough to share that when the business started, she had nothing, but she wanted to build something for her community that would bring different cultures to the area and share them.
Grajeda also spoke of the anxiety of starting the venture and her advice to others looking to do the same, “Take the opportunities. Try to fight fear, it will try to stop you from doing what you want to do.” With triple the space of the East side location, Grajeda hopes to reach even more people with the new dwelling.
Many city officials were in attendance for the ribbon cutting, including Mayor Eric Genrich and Alderperson Jim Ridderbush. They shared gratitude for what Grajeda’s business brings to the community and the lasting success she has achieved. Ridderbush divulged that the area prior to the supermarket opening was a food desert, and the addition will be a great investment for the surrounding community.
Grajeda is not ignorant to the impact her community also has on her, she says, “Thank you for welcoming us to the community, we are very grateful and look forward to continuing to serve the Green Bay community, welcome to Mi Favorita Supermarket.”
