A Minnesota grocery distributor has recalled hundreds of products sent to dozens of stores in the state, after unsanitary conditions were found in the company’s facility in Minneapolis.
The recall affects products handled by Gold Star Distribution.
The notice said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found “the presence of rodent excreta, rodent urine and bird droppings in areas where medical devices, drugs, human food, pet food and cosmetic products were held. These conditions create a significant risk that products held at the facility may have been contaminated with filth and harmful microorganisms.”
That creates the potential for people to become sick, though there have been no reports of illnesses.
The 44-page recall list includes a variety of pet food, over-the-counter medication, candy, canned goods, cereal and other grocery items.
The products were potentially sent to more than 50 stores across Minnesota, mostly in the Twin Cities but also in Rochester and St. Cloud. Stores in Fargo, N.D., and Indianapolis may also be affected.
“Consumers and retailers who purchased the affected products should destroy the products as soon as possible and verify such destruction by receipt provided to Gold Star,” the recall notice said. “Products should not be shipped back to Gold Star under any circumstances. Gold Star will provide refunds upon request.”
