The Hawaii Department of Health Food and Drug Branch alerts residents to a recall issued by Mars Petcare US, Inc. for two lots of its Pedigree Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor wet dog food in 13.2-ounce cans.
According to a news release, the recall was issued because of the “potential” presence of metal and plastic pieces in the food that could injure or pose a choking hazard to pets.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration website states that the recalled product had been sent to a third-party vendor to be destroyed, however, the pet food company later learned the product had been “fraudulently diverted and sold into the marketplace in the United States.”
Because of this, FDB is unable to track if the product was sold in Hawaii stores. Therefore, the agency recommends all customers who purchased the product to check their labels for the following information:

Hard or sharp foreign objects in food could cause injuries ranging from choking to lacerations or blockages in dogs’ gastrointestinal tract. FDB advises people who have fed the product to their dog to contact the veterinarian. There have been no reports of injury to date, says the agency.
