Opening date set for Maine’s first ALDI store, which is located in Portland
PORTLAND, Maine —
ALDI now has a scheduled opening date for its first location in Maine.
The discount grocery chain will open the store at the Pine Tree Shopping Center in Portland on March 26.
ALDI had previously informed Maine’s Total Coverage that it expected to open the location in March.
The company initially said it planned to open the store in the former Big Lots on Brighton Avenue before the end of 2025, but that was pushed back. In October 2025, a spokesperson said they hoped to open in the first part of 2026.
Chris Daniels, a division vice president for ALDI, told Maine’s Total Coverage earlier this month that “construction shifts” changed the opening timeline of the Portland store.
Daniels previously told Maine’s Total Coverage ALDI plans to hire 15 to 20 full- and part-time employees to work at the new store.

The company promotes itself as a discount grocery store with about 90% of the store’s food items under the ALDI label.
