BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The 12th-ranked UVM men’s soccer team got off to a quick start and downed regional foe UMass 3-0 Tuesday night at Virtue Field to wrap the nonconference portion of the schedule.
The Cats struck less than two minutes in via Aleksei Carnier, Arthur Caldas doubled the lead just a few minutes later, and Pieter Bultman put the exclamation point on the victory in the second half.
“Yeah, I mean, I’m always here for the team when the team needs me,” Carnier said. “So I think scoring or doing assists is part of my job. So, yeah, I’m pretty happy to help my team.”
Niklas Herceg posted a five-save clean sheet, the 23rd of his Catamount career. That moves him ahead of Nate Silveira for third most shutouts in program history.
“We had a huge loss, our first loss of the season two weeks ago (vs Dartmouth),” Herceg said. “And we worked on it. Everybody knows what we could do better, did a lot of film. And then take it game by game and try to make the things better that we maybe didn’t do that well in the game that we lost. And we also know how college soccer can be sometimes. So I think the key is just knowing what type of qualities we have and how good we are. And from there just going game for game.”
UVM will head back into America East play on Saturday afternoon as they host NJIT.
