A new supermarket concept is taking over a long-vacant Stop & Shop store in Central Jersey.
Slated to open Oct. 9 at 1125 Inman Ave. in Edison, Go-Pal Supermarkets will establish a hybrid of an American and Indian grocery store.
Owner Nick Patel told NJ.com the completely renovated 50,000-square-foot space will carry everything shoppers would expect from a traditional grocery store plus an extensive range of Indian items.
That includes a floral department, bakery, produce section, meat and seafood counters, dairy, frozen foods, full-service catering and a deli. There will also be an Indian kitchen and American ready-to-eat meals, the outlet reported. Other product categories include baby, beauty & personal care, health & wellness, household essentials and pet.
Additionally, shoppers will have access to online ordering, phone ordering and pickup.
It will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., according to the store’s website.

After debuting Go-Pal in Edison, Patel told NJ.com he hopes to open two additional stores elsewhere in the state in coming months. However, specific sites and timelines were not disclosed.
At the 113,000-square-foot Levin Management-operated Inman Grove Shopping Center, Go-Pal joins a tenant mix that includes Taco Bell, Wells Fargo, Planet Wings, Ivy Rehab, Allstate, Dunkin’, CSL Plasma, UPS Store, Verizon, Kumon, Dairy Queen and Discovery Christian Montessori School.
The Stop & Shop anchor space has been empty since the Ahold Delhaize-owned chain shuttered 32 underperforming locations across the Northeast in late 2024. Ten of those sites were in New Jersey.
Stop & Shop currently has 47 supermarkets across the state. However, it plans to close outposts in Westfield and Basking Ridge this fall following a “routine evaluation of our store operations.” The grocer’s 350-store footprint also extends to Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island.
The string of closures over the past two years are tied to a broader, multiyear strategy designed to strengthen Stop & Shop’s competitive position. The chain has also lowered prices, made operational improvements and enhanced fresh offerings. Additionally, Stop & Shop has remodeled roughly half of its stores across the Northeast. Within New Jersey, outposts such as Clifton, Bayonne, Pompton Plains, Wayne and South Orange have been updated.
