Hy-Vee proposes new Johnson County grocery store location

As Johnson County development continues to transform empty plots of land out west, a popular grocery store chain is looking to claim its own slice.

Hy-Vee has filed an application to build a new supermarket in western Lenexa, near 83rd Street and Kansas Highway 7.

The spot’s official address would be 22939 W. 83rd St., according to an application sent to the city. The plot of land neighbors Westside Family Church and Freedom Fields baseball fields.

The plans also call for eight separate buildings — including a Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh, bank, restaurant and several offices — in the surrounding area as part of the development. No other tenants were named in the plans.

The grocery store itself would be 93,000 square feet.

City spokesperson Denise Rendina confirmed that the city had received the application and will tentatively discuss it at the planning commission’s upcoming meeting Oct. 5.

Most of the developed land nearby is residential, with few grocery stores in proximity. A McKeever’s Price Chopper is about four miles down the highway and further east at 1906 W. 101st St., Lenexa.

Before Hy-Vee can build a grocery store, it must first go through both the planning commission and city council to receive approval.

More development in western Lenexa is in the works, including an 11-lot subdivision at 98th Street and Woodsonia Drive and the 346-unit Canyon Ridge Apartments.

The Star reached out to the project’s engineer, Greg Watson of McClure, but did not hear back in time for publication Friday. The Star also contacted Hy-Vee but did not receive a response.

Hy-Vee, which began in Iowa in 1930, has stretched its presence across the Midwest and now boasts hundreds of stores in Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

It already has several stores in the KC metro, including another in Lenexa at 13400 W. 87th St. Parkway.
