Market of Choice expands in Portland, taking over Basics Market’s Hillsdale store — the company’s last remaining location.

PORTLAND, Oregon — Oregon’s largest independent, family-owned grocer, Market of Choice, announced Monday that it will take over Basics Market in Portland’s Hillsdale neighborhood.

The acquisition will expand Market of Choice’s store count to 13 statewide and five in the Portland metro area — and reduce Basics Market’s to zero.

After opening in 2018, Basics Market grew to six grocery stores across Portland, Beaverton and Tualatin. But its footprint began to shrink, leaving one remaining store in Portland’s Hillsdale Shopping Center.

The transition to Market of Choice is expected to take place June 23, with no temporary store closure anticipated, the company said in a news release.

“We’re excited to become part of the Hillsdale community as a local anchor, providing access to fresh food and strengthening the neighborhood economy,” said Zach Wright, president of Market of Choice.

While the location has a smaller footprint than many Market of Choice stores, the grocer said customers will still enjoy an “exceptional selection” of local products, from farm-fresh organic produce and artisan-baked goods to specialty cheeses and sustainably raised beef, pork and seafood.

“This location represents an important moment for us as we test a smaller, neighborhood store format that, if successful, could shape how Market of Choice grows in communities across Oregon,” Wright said.
