OMAHA, Neb. —
After nearly four decades of serving its community, Chubb Foods is getting a makeover and temporarily closing its doors.
Chubb Foods has been a staple on the corner of 16th and Locust streets since its opening in 1985. The store is known for its discount prices and acceptance of EBT.
But on Feb. 8, Chubb’s closed its doors.
General Manager Anne Gordon told KETV that they just couldn’t afford to stay afloat with the cost of wholesale grocery supplies, so Chubb Foods is going to downsize
“We’re not going to have Chubb’s on our building. We’ll bring in the nostalgia, but you will have a fresh look,” Gordon said.
The new convenience-sized store will carry most of the same things. But it’ll include a gas station and drive-thru.
Gordon says they sold items at up to 70% off ahead of the store’s closing. The remaining items were donated to food banks, schools and Black Men United.
Gordon estimated the number of donations to be $20,000.
“We went up to 70% off on alcohol. We could have took a ride to the gas station and sold it there, but it’s about giving back,” Gordon said.
Gordon tells me the remaining four employees that Chubb had were relocated to other stores. They’ll be back once the remodel is complete this fall.
